JEHOVA WANYONYI: The sect leader who claims he is ‘God’

Have you ever heard anyone calling himself God and some people religiously believe in him? Well if not there is one JehovaWanyonyi who claims that he is God. His home is in Chemororoch, a sleepy village in UasinGishu County about fifty kilometres or so from Eldoret town on your way to Kitale. It is Saturday morning and precisely 9.30 a.m. The home is quiet with three semi-permanent houses - one of them keeps JehovaWanyonyi warm....

The home is quiet with three semi-permanent houses - one of them keeps JehovaWanyonyi warm. His flock begins to enter his compound with their regalia. Some dress in white while others have yellow and blue overflowing gowns and robes.   They call themselves the lost Israelites of Kenya.  Their mass is normally held on Saturdays and takes about forty minutes. The service is always conducted outside JehovaWanyonyi’s house, his followers peeping  through the open door facing him. He adorns a red gown and remains seated atleast the time when we were there.

Inside the house, the self-proclaimed God sits reverentially in deep meditation as his "subjects" get ready for the service. He peers at them blankly as if in a trace.

One of his confidentes hinted to me that he does not conduct the mass because he got a back injury while another one said that he is God and delegates the authority to one member of the church. His aides who call themselves angels jealously protect their leader. We wanted to get a lot of information about their boss but we were only given two minutes.

And when we sat down for the two-minute interview Jehovah Wanyonyi reiterated that he is God although he was born by a human being just like other people.

“There is only one thing I want to people to believe. That I Am God. Although you will struggle to find much about me until the last day when you will see me in true colours. If you don’t want to believe it is ok", Wanyonyi declares. He frowned when completing his statement. After the Service I met two out of his five angels all of them are men. William Misiko is one of them and he believes that Jehovawanyonyi is so superior and even Jesus Christ knows it.

“This Jehova that you have seen here doesn't care even if many people do not know about him but one day everything that walks and crawls will acknowledge him...When Jesus christ will come from heaven we will bring him before the feet of JehovaWanyonyi. We are quite sure that will happen. You can choose to ignore us but that is the position”

Then there is EliabWanyonyi who says that Jehova is god and he has not discloses the last day to them or even Jesus christ.The 89 year Wanyonyi has more than 100 children and more than ten wives. His wives are called Holy spirit but only Susan Nabayo who is in her thirties speaks on their behalf. She is happy with title and brags of living with the Supreme Being according to her. ‘I know a lot of things, earthly and even heavenly because I leave with god. I am not a normal earthly woman because I am a wife of god. I talk to people who have issues and then I take the prayer items to Jehova", she said. However despite the title and her close contact with God, she admits that she gets sick and is also affected by the earthly problems as a human being.

She said she was married in a traditional way and Jehovawanyonyi paid dowry to her parents which she did not want to quantify. She believeWanyonyi is the real god.

“ I want all the people to pray and believe in somebody who they see. Atleast for us we know how our god looks like.”However most neighbours have reservations about Wanyonyi’s mission. Eliud Musa says Wanyonyi once tricked people that he is going to heaven. He climbed on a tree and jumped up to fly but he ended up falling down. Another one who identified herself as Elzabeth did not mince her words.

“That is a liar. He is not God. Let his followers just call him a pastor. Which God drinks alcohol and becomes sick regularly. We believe in hevenly God.”

In eightie and nineties Wanyonyi had thousands of followers spread across Western province and operated from Kongoni area in Kakamega County as well as in Bungoma county. But for now he has a paltry fourty families that think he will take them to the promised land.
