KDF foil kidnap of PS for Public Works Maryam Elmaawy

The Principal Secretary for Public Works Maryam Elmaawy had a narrow escaped this afternoon after she was snatched by Al-Shabaab militants but rescued swift by Kenya Defence Forces officers who swung into action.

A Toyota Prado together with its six occupants that had been taken hostage by suspected Al Shabaab militants at Milihoi area on the Lamu-Mpeketoni highway, was recovered by Kenya Defense Forces on the outskirts of Boni forest.

Police say vehicle was carrying Elmaawy, who had just completed a meeting with LAPSSET stakeholders in Lamu and was heading to Witu to visit families who fled their homes due to insecurity caused Alshabaab attacks.

The PS was rescued by KDF but she is said to have suffered gunshot injuries on her shoulder and leg, while a burnt body was also recovered. It was not immediately clear whether the body was the driver’s.

Two other Toyota Probox vehicles that had initially been held were released while the Prado was driven into the Boni forest by the militants who amounted to more than 30 according to witnesses.

El-Maawy was in the area for a consultation meeting with stakeholders.

The vehicle was heading to Witu at the time they were ambushed by the militants.

Reports indicate that she was on her way to visit families who fled their homes due to insecurity in the region.

Witnesses said the vehicle was driven into the Boni forest by the about 30 militants at around 3pm.

Two other Probox vehicles that were held by the hostiles were released.
