Prof Makau Mutua gets High Court backing to join race for Chief Justice

Law lecturer Prof Makau Mutua and six other applicants for the position of Chief Justice got a lifeline on Monday after the High Court ruled that they should be interviewed for the job.

Consequently, the Judicial Service Commission in compliance with the ruling listed Mutua and the other applicants to appear before the interviewees from September 6.

Apart from Mutua, other applicants include Supreme Court Judge Prof Jackton Ojwang and former Appelate Judge Aaron Ringera.

The others are David Wambua, Isaac Rutenberg and David Waihiga. 

Also to be interviewed are candidates for Deputy Chief Justice and Supreme Court judge who had been eliminated.

Justice George Odunga barred the Judicial Service Commission from making recommendations to the President until they are considered.

The ruling by Odunga was made as the JSC interviewed Justice Alnashir Visram. The Court of Appeal judge said he will rid the judiciary of corruption in 100 days. He has worked in the judiciary for 17 years.

He was the first applicant to appear before JSC. Others scheduled to be interviewed include High Court Judge Msagha Mbogholi, Court of Appeal judges Roselyne Nambuye and david Maraga, DSupreme Court Judge Siomkin Wanbjala and Senior Counsel Nzamba Kitonga.
