Kenya bags her first medal as Vivian Cheruiyot wins silver in 10,000m

World champion Vivian Cheruiyot on Friday won Kenya a silver medal in the women's 10,000m at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in a race in which Ethiopian Almaz Ayana set a new World Record time of 29:17.45.

Cheruiyot who put up a strong fight, was blown away by Ayana who ran her own race to take the gold in the first final on the track in Rio de Janeiro.
Watched by a crowd that included Deputy President William Ruto, Cheruiyot bagged Kenya's first medal since the games started seven days ago.
Earlier on the same track, Kenya's representatives in the 800m for men all qualified to the semi finals of the event. David Rudisha, Ferguson Rotich and Alfred Kipketer eased past their opponents to put themselves in a good position to vie for the gold medal. The semi finals will be run on Sunday at 4am.
